WE REMEMBER
As we reflect on the events of three years ago, our hearts remain heavy with the memory of the tragic events inflicted upon our nation by Dictator Museveni’s regime. November 18th, 2023, marks a somber anniversary – a day etched in our history by a brutal crackdown that resulted in the loss of over fifty innocent Ugandans. These individuals courageously stood for justice and democracy, facing unspeakable violence.
We take this moment to honor the memory of those lost in the November massacre and all who have suffered under the relentless oppression of the regime. Their stories, their aspirations for a just and democratic society, remain at the forefront of our minds.
Today, we invite you not to an event, but to a reflection. A reflection on the resilience and strength of a people who continue to endure hardship and strive for a better tomorrow. It is a day to recognize the ongoing struggles faced by Ugandans striving for justice, equality, and freedom in the face of adversity.
Let us, as a global community, stand in solidarity with the people of Uganda. Let us acknowledge their resilience and unwavering determination amidst adversity. Together, let us amplify their voices and support their aspirations for a brighter, more equitable future.
In remembrance and solidarity
Uganda, January 2021 Elections
The initiative was founded in the wake of the 2021 Ugandan presidential and parliamentary elections, which were widely seen as fraudulent. Since then, we have been organizing weekly protests and other activities to demand that the government respect the will of the people.
We are a diverse group of people from all walks of life. We are united by our common belief that Uganda deserves better.
We are dedicated to pursuing our objectives through peaceful methods, adhering to a nonviolent approach.
We believe that the future of Uganda depends on the courage and determination of its people.
We are calling on all Ugandans to stand up for their rights and to demand a better future for their country.
The Stolen Elections
In 2021, Uganda witnessed a deeply troubling episode in its democratic history, marked by the actions of Dictator Yoweri Museveni. The supposed democratic process was marred by a series of egregious transgressions that shook the very foundations of fair elections. Museveni, in power for close to 40 years, further entrenched his rule through tactics that epitomized the abuse of democracy.
Abuse of Democracy:
The abuse of democracy in Uganda’s 2021 elections was shockingly blatant. Opposition parties and candidates faced severe restrictions, with arbitrary arrests, intimidation, and harassment becoming commonplace. The clampdown on free speech, assembly, and expression severely undermined the essence of democratic values, leaving the electorate in a state of vulnerability.
Election Violence:
The elections were also characterized by disturbing levels of violence. Instances of state-sanctioned violence against opposition supporters were widely documented, painting a grim picture of the electoral landscape. The oppressive tactics employed not only violated the rights of Ugandans to participate in the democratic process without fear, but also eroded the credibility of the entire electoral system.
